Known Problems during the installation and setup of steadyPRINT VPD

Description of the problem

This article describes known problems that might occur during the installation and/or the setup of steadyPRINT VPD as well as appropriate solutions. The basic and detailed installation guide from https://www.steadyprint.com/user-manual/virtual_printer_driver_vpd.htm serves as the basis. For installation and setup, please follow the steps described.

Solution

Some recurring problems and notes affecting the functionality of steadyPRINT VPD are described in the following:

steadyPRINT vPrinter or steadyPRINT vDirect printer are not created

Please verify the following points:

  1. No configuration of steadyPRINT VPD for print server: A print server has to be configured via the steadyPRINT Cennter in order to become VPD-capable. To do this, please follow the steps described in https://www.steadyprint.com/user-manual/administration.htm .
  1. Installation of printer driver for x86- and x64 systems on print server: If the client has a 32 bit operating system, it is indispensable to install the steadyPRINT Virtual Printer Driver in x86 version. The same applies to x64 systems. The driver can be found in the steadyPRINT installation directory.
  1. Sharing print$ available for drivers on print server. This requires considering whether the share name print$ exists on the print server under Computer Administration > System > Shared Folders > Sharings. The share name is automatically created by Windows after the first printer has been shared on the print server. In case the sharing is missing, the download of the VPD driver from the print server via the steadyPRINT Service will not be possible during the VPD printer creation on the client.
  1. No installation possible in Citrix environment: Please check the knowledge base article https://www.steadyprint.com/installation-of-steadyprint-vpd-and-printer-drivers-with-steadyprint-not-possible-in-citrix-environments/.

Printing process does not create printer output

Please verify the following points:

  1. Print job is in the print job directory and carries the status “Printed” (see print job view of steadyPRINT Agent): In this case the print job has been successfully processed, there is, however, a problem with the output device. Please check the points from the paragraph Wrong output at printer.
  1. Print job is in the print job directory and carries the status “Open” (see print job view of steadyPRINT Agent): In this case, the print job has been successfully processed on the client, the print server, however, does not recognize the new order properly. For troubleshooting, please work off the following points.
  1. steadyPRINT Server service not started: Please make sure that the steadyPRINT Server service on the print server has been installed and started on the client by the steadyPRINT Agent in the same version.
  1. Restart steadyPRINT Server service: If the configuration of steadyPRINT VPD has been modified via the steadyPRINT Center, a restart of the steadyPRINT Server service on the affected print servers becomes necessary. In general, the required restart is directly displayed as a warning in the settings and can be performed from there.
  1. Print job directory not accessible: Make sure that the print job directory is accessible from the steadyPRINT Server service and that it has sufficent permissions to access the print jobs. For this purpose, check the Windows event log. If the directory cannot be accessed, an error message will be displayed. After a possible adjustment of the permissions of the print job directory, a restart of the steadyPRINT Server service is required.
Summary: Print job directory accessible, shared and stored as UNC path in the VPD configuration in the steadyPRINT Center; Service users are allowed to access print job directory.
  1. Reliability of steadyPRINT VPD: Make sure that the steadyPRINT Server Service as well as the steadyPRINT Virtual Printer Driver driver for x86- and x64 Systems have been installed on the master and the backup print server.

Wrong printer output

Please verify the following points:

  1. Current driver version: Please make sure that the most recent manufacturer driver has been installed on the print server.
  1. Verification of known problems: Please check the solutions described in knowledge base article VPD – Known Issues.
