Recommendation for action: Generalization Issue with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops VDA 2511

Description of the problem

With version VDA 2511 (Current Release), Citrix has introduced a change in how Windows generalization is handled.

The background is a Microsoft security update that blocks communication between Windows servers if they have identical internal system IDs. This does not refer to the Active Directory SID, but rather to the local Windows Machine ID. In cloned server environments, it may therefore occur that multiple systems are running with the same ID. While this is often not critical in classic VDI scenarios—since the targets do not need to communicate directly with each other—it can cause problems in steadyPRINT environments, where direct and encrypted communication between components takes place.

In VDA 2511, Citrix attempts to address this behavior by performing its own generalization during installation. However, in steadyPRINT environments this can lead to unexpected side effects. Typical symptoms include communication issues between steadyPRINT services, unreachable components, or faulty connections after deploying or cloning images. This behavior has already been observed in several customer environments. Further details about the known issues reported by Citrix can be found in the official Known Issues section.

Solution

For productive steadyPRINT environments, we continue to recommend using the LTSR version VDA 2507. Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 7 2507 is currently considered a stable and proven version when used together with steadyPRINT. Rolling back to this version is currently the cleanest and most sustainable solution.

If VDA 2511 must still be used, a technical workaround can be provided via a script. After cloning, this script reinitializes the database connection as well as the affected components, thereby restoring communication between the servers. A fundamental structural change within steadyPRINT, on the other hand, would require significant modifications to the existing encryption and communication logic and cannot be implemented in the short term.

The corresponding script can be provided upon request. Please contact our support team directly for this purpose.
